Penitentiary of New Mexico History

PNM has a distinct history that should not be merged with county jail history. NMCD says the original state penitentiary facility was built in 1885, and Old Main replaced it in 1956. In February 1980, one of the most violent prison riots in correctional history occurred at Old Main. NMCD's history says the event lasted 36 hours, approximately 33 inmates were killed, and 12 guards were held hostage and beaten. Cell Block 4 was the site of some of the worst violence.

Old Main closed in 1998 and is now used for tours and film sets. NMCD also states that the New Mexico Corrections Training Academy opened in 1980 and became the first correctional training academy in the nation.
